AASHTO LRFD Guide Specifications for the Design of FRP Pedestrian Bridges, 2nd Edition 2025
The first edition of the Guide Specifications for Design of FRP Pedestrian Bridges, published in 2008, was intended for FRP truss bridges made by bolting pultruded elements together. Since that time, pultruded FRP planks and vacuum infusion molded FRP panels have been used as bridge decking supported by steel, concrete, or timber beams. The design provisions were based on Allowable Stress Design (ASD) and Load Factor Design (LFD).
This second edition, LRFD Guide Specifications for the Design of FRP Pedestrian Bridges, provides additional guidance unique to the design of FRP pedestrian bridges. Because the design provisions are based on Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD), using the current state of practice for the design and detailing of FRP pedestrian bridges, this updated edition is designed to supplement information in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 10th Edition, and the LRFD Guide Specifications for the Design of Pedestrian Bridges, 2nd Edition.
The emphasis of these updated guide specifications is on delegated design, where the manufacturer is responsible for the design of FRP pedestrian bridges using performance specifications and requirements specified by the designer/owner. The manufacturer is also responsible for designing and detailing connections to fit with the FRP decking or bridge system.
